Chinese Community Fitness Day

The year 2006 marked the first Chinese Community Fitness Day in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Chinese Community Fitness Day was organized by the Chinese Community Health Resource Center, American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter, Community Youth Center, and Sing Tao Daily. It was the first of its kind health- and fitness-centered event designed to benefit the underserved Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking population in San Francisco with the emphasis of promoting healthy lifestyle. This event provided bilingual educational information and activities for attendees to better understand physical fitness and health management. Examples of available free activities are: information booths such as ask the doctor, condition-specific exercises (arthritis, asthma, etc); seminars on physical fitness activities and health; health screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index, cholesterol, hepatitis B, osteoporosis and etc., and active engagement in moderate physical exercises such as Tai Chi, Lok Tung Kuen, baseball, basketball and other sports. On October 7, 2006, Chinese Community Fitness Day drew approximately 1,800 participants from the San Francisco Bay Area.
